The Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC) will host a second bicycle ride and protest on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 in honor of downed cyclist and City employee Ed Magos—and other victims of hit-and-run collisions whose cases have been unjustly treated only to have the drivers time and time again receive unfairly light sentences—if any at all.

Via Biking In L.A. comes news that Angelina Everett, the driver who ran down city employee and community activist Ed Magos in January, has plead "no contest" to two misdemeanor charges for leaving the scene of a collision resulting in physical injuries and property damage.  While it's doubtful that Everett will face any jail time, after all she only crippled a person and left him lying in the street it's not like she meant to hurt him, this outcome is still much better than what was expected after the City Attorney and District Attorney took a pass on prosecuting Everett last winter.

(Update: Tuesday, 2/23/10 at 8:02 A.M. - I had a chance to talk with Magos' lawyer over email last night and he confirmed that the LAPD sent the case to both the District Attorney and City Attorney; so in this case the LAPD isn't to blame.  I'm going to leave the text below unchanged so that the anyone reading through won't be confused by the comments section.)

It's been two weeks since the LAPD closed their investigation into the April 6th bicycle crash that left Susanna Schick hospitalized with broken ribs, concussions and other  injuries.  Schick claims that the driver of a white Lexus ran her down from behind in the late night crash.  The LAPD claims she fell off her bicycle.  The police basically refused to investigate the crash, despite press reports promising a thorough investigation, and because Schick claims a hit and run, there will likely never be true resolution to the crash.

If someone had told me a year ago that we would be celebrating a Bike Plan that the cycling community loved, that Metro would have already received some 30/10 money from the federal government and that the LAPD was being praised for its bike-friendly efforts at the end of the year I wouldn't have thought them crazy.  I just would have ignored them.  Heck, even CicLAvia seemed like a pipe dream at the start of the year because the Mayor's Office wasn't on board.  Now I have contacts in City Hall joke that we're the only people that still like him.

2010 has been a heck of a year for Streetsblog, especially Los Angeles Streetsblog.  We could go through all the details again, but let's suffice it to say that I've been blessed with the best readers in the world.

Thanksgiving Day is only a week away and already I have been contemplating the many things I have to be thankful for.  Earlier this year, on January 6th, I was involved in a hit-and-run while cycling to work.  As I was being strapped to a stretcher and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, I was unaware that the events of the morning were being shared rapidly through Twitter, email, phone calls, and later that day through blogs.  Thanks to these communications my wife and family were able to meet me at the hospital well before I would have been able to contact them myself.

As I worked on the daily "Today's Headlines" roundup for this morning, there were three items I wanted to pull because they paint an ugly picture about what's going on in our streets.
