Last week, Metro finished its most recent public meetings outlining twelve proposals to fill the so-called 4.5 mile "gap" on the I-710 between Alhambra and Pasadena at the I-210. The public response to the twelve alternatives presented was near-uniformly negative. Anger was particularly high at new proposals to connect the I-710 to the I-210 including, a tunnel connecting the 10 Freeway to the 134 Freeway, a surface route that would widen Avenue 64 and a highway route along Huntington Drive, Fair Oaks Avenue and Pasadena Avenue.

Once the deal is finalized, the city has promised a public process to decide the future land use, transportation network, and utility infrastructure network for the land that is now-called the Ditch.

Yesterday, the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), a national non-profit with state chapters throughout the country, released a report detailing the "12 biggest highway boondoggles" under study in the country. Not surprisingly, a California highway project made the list, the I-710 Tunnel Project in Los Angeles County.

The Metro/Caltrans 710 North EIR Study which is totally excited about digging a big tunnel examines the options to bring a lot more traffic alleviate car congestion in the area. Oh, who am I kidding, they really want to dig a big tunnel.

Last week, Caltrans and Metro released the long-awaited draft environmental impact report for options to improve transportation near where the I-710 ends, 4.5 miles south of the I-210. As usual, the discussion around the document depends on whether or not one thinks it's a good idea to dig a five-mile tunnel 150 feet underground to connect one freeway to another freeway.

Last week, a mini-furor was passed around by opponents of the 710 Big Dig project. The Pasadena Independent reported that the City of Rosemead is using a portion of the over $500,000 it receives annually in Measure R Local Return funds to pay its membership dues in the 710 Coalition. From the Independent:
