Complete Streets Bill Introduced in Senate
Earlier this week, 12 senators, led by Tom Harkin (D-IA), introduced the Complete Streets Act of 2011 (S.1056), a companion to the House bill we reported on a few weeks back. The purpose of the bills is to push states and metropolitan planning organizations to fully consider incorporating pedestrian and bicycle safety measures when roads are built or reconstructed.

Will Figueroa Street Be Los Angeles’ First Truly Complete Street?
I have to be honest. If the My Figueroa project ends up fulfilling its mission of designing a people-friendly Figueroa Street from the southwest corner of Exposition Park to Downtown Los Angeles only by adding a couple of trees and repainting the crosswalks, I'll be extremely disappointed.

How Quickly Will Caltrans Embrace Complete Streets Policies?
Though
it may seem esoteric, one of the biggest impediments to designing
streets for people is the over-reliance on design standards that have
long privileged movement of vehicles over any other consideration on
the streets. That's why advocates cheered when U.S. DOT Secretary Ray LaHood published a policy paper recently that, at least in word, placed bicycles and pedestrians on equal footing with motorists.
