Some Los Angeles Road Diet Projects Can Add More On-Street Parking
Most of the city of Los Angeles' bike lane mileage has been implemented without removing any car lanes or any parking spaces. The city Transportation Department (LADOT) merely narrows existing overly-wide lanes, and adds bike lanes. In recent years, the city of Los Angeles has also done a number of bike lane projects called "road diets." These road diets do remove a travel lane.

Mayor Garcetti Nominates New LADOT Head: Seleta Reynolds
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti has nominated Seleta Reynolds to be the new general manager for the city's Transportation Department (LADOT.) From preliminary research on Reynolds's background, this looks like great news. Reynolds currently works for San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) where her focus had been livable streets, with a focus on building more equitable streets.

North Figueroa Bike Lanes: Public Safety Reps Against Public Safety Project
At last week's North Figueroa Street bike lane meeting there was a contentious debate. Cyclists are urging installation of road diet bike lanes to improve safety for all. Bike lanes were approved in the city's 2010 Bike Plan; L.A.'s Transportation Department (LADOT) studied the lanes extensively, and appeared to be on the verge of installing them. Then a new L.A. City Councilmember was elected.

News Bites from BikeLA Webinar: Gap, Parking, Cycle Tracks, Metrolink
Last night, the city of Los Angeles Departments of Transportation (LADOT) and City Planning (DCP) hosted a webinar to introduce L.A. cyclists to what are called the "second year study corridors" for the L.A. City Bicycle Plan. The webinar included a presentation and a question and answer session. The unscripted Q&A yielded a handful of newsworthy tidbits. SBLA will report these newsbites first, then, next week, review bike plan implementation, including the "first year" and "second year" batches.

Eyes On The Street: Broadway’s Got New Bulb-Outs
Crews are out this week doing striping and new crosswalks for a project called Broadway's Dress Rehearsal. Broadway is, arguably, Los Angeles' most heavily pedestrian street. The current project reallocates former car-lane space to make way for pedestrians. It's no secret that the transformation here is inspired by NYC's relatively-inexpensive street plazas, including Times Square.

March Transpo Committee Recap: SRTS, Counts, Parking and Commish Bayne
Yesterday's Los Angeles City Council Transportation Committee meeting featured a number of livability issues that deserve more in-depth attention: Safe Routes to School, bicycle and pedestrian traffic counts, parking privatization, and more. More Eyes on the Street: 2nd Street Protected Bike Lane Damaged in Crash
Some time in the last couple of days, the 2nd Street protected bike lane was damaged when a car crashed through the pylons into the side of the 2nd Street Tunnel heading into Downtown Los Angeles. Sahra Sulaiman snapped this picture yesterday and reports that at least three of the barrier pylons were removed, a trail of debris was left behind, and even a tire can be seen in the picture.
