City Throws a Party. Press Throws a Fit. This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things.
This Friday, the City of Los Angeles is throwing itself a party in Grand Park from 5 pm to 10 pm. There will be music by local acts, student groups and celebrity musicians. Chefs, some of whom are on television, will give healthy cooking demonstrations. There will be food trucks. There will be free nachos. President Bill Clinton will speak. Wanda Sykes will tell jokes. Ryan Seacrest will do whatever it is Ryan Seacrest does.

Bundy Triangle Park Open for Business (with a permit…)
Sitting at the corner of Bundy and Santa Monica Boulevards in West Los Angeles is a small piece of open space known locally as the Bundy Triangle Park. Ever since a homeless person was found dead in the park in the 1990's the park has been surrounded by bars, literally caging open space in the park poor city.

Villaraigosa Announces Ambitious Initiative for 50 New Parks
Yesterday, Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa formally announced that the city's "50 Parks Initiative" is underway. The city's Recreation and Parks Department is acquiring land for fifty new parks, predominantly in park-poor population-dense neighborhoods.

Aileen Getty Foundation Donates $1.2 Million to Hollywood Central Park
Friends of the Hollywood Central Park (FHCP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a 44-acre street-level park over the Hollywood Freeway in a densely populated and park-poor area of the city, accepted a $1.2 million gift today from the Aileen Getty Foundation. The donation, combined $825,000 from the city fully funds the park's environmental study, a study needed before fundraising can truly begin for design and construction.

Advocates, Rep. Schiff Meet with Secretary LaHood on Hollywood Cap Park
Advocates for more open space for the park-starved community of Hollywood had a moment to shine yesterday. Congressman Adam Schiff, members of the Hollywood Central Park Committee and other neighborhood advocates had a meeting with USDOT Secretary Ray LaHood to discuss their proposal to place a 44-acre street level park "on top" of the 101 Hollywood Freeway.

RIDING BACK FROM an interview at a school garden off King Blvd., I came across a dozen guys engaged in a serious game of fĂștbol in a Coliseum parking lot. Curious, I plopped myself down next to Oscar Villatoro, a sweet guy in glasses who was sitting out the game because of a bum knee.

Pocket Plan? Mayor Proposes 50 Small Parks to Address Lack of Open Space
Noting a lack of large, publicly owned, land still available, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced a plan to develop 50 pocket parks scattered throughout the city over the next year and a half.
