One of the exciting things about covering South L.A. is how active the communities within the area are. So active, in fact, I cannot always keep up with everything that is going on. Instead of writing stories this week, I've been catching up on piecing together the interviews, photos, and stories I've been tracking for some time so that I can hit the ground running with some more in-depth stories next week. I was hoping to have this weekend off to finish that process, but that might not happen. There's too much amazing stuff going on. Check it out:

Last night, Multicultural Communities for Mobility (MCM), formerly City of Lights, held its third annual awards dinner and ceremony. Alongside deserving honorees Michelle Mowery (Senior Bicycle Coordinator at the L.A. Department of Transportation), and Howard Krepack (Attorney and Partner at GEK Law), stood South L.A.'s own (and also very deserving) John Jones III, president of the East Side Riders.

"It's still important for us to come together," began Taryn Randle, one of the ride leaders and member of both the Ovarian Psycos and Black Kids on Bikes.

This morning, HNTB was announced as winner of the Sixth Street Viaduct design competition.

When New York’s Department of City Planning put forth a plan to rezone 78 blocks around Grand Central Terminal this summer, observers questioned whether the imminent arrival of gleaming towers and density would enhance the skyline at the expense of the layers of history of the neighborhoods or the area's soul.
