Congresswoman-elect Kathy Dahlkemper overcame ridicule for her "wacky" notion that Pennsylvanians should try walking and cycling. But down in western North Carolina, voters returned Rep. Patrick McHenry -- shown here mocking, and misrepresenting, the federal bike commuter tax benefit -- to Washington.

Recap of the Tour De Ballona
As I've mentioned before, the Tour De Ballona was just one of several events for bicycle enthusiasts from last weekend. Despite it's reputation, Los Angeles has a thriving bike culture and this blog is going to join in the effort to make sure that people know that if you know where to look, this city is bursting at the seems with bikes, cyclists, and ways to get involved. Streetsblog will feature pictures and stories from other rides tomorrow.

Bike Day Saturday: Tour De Ballona
With news of more attacks along the Ballona Creek Bike trail breaking earlier this week, it is more urgent than ever to get more people to use the trail and create a more safe environment. An increased safety presence from the city, especially the LAPD Pacific Division, appear to be in the works. But in the meantime, it's up to all of us to help make the trail as safe as possible.

Cartoon Tuesday: Cycling = Healthy, Pt. 2
Here's another installment in the "cycling is good for you" series, this time from New York insurer Emblem Health. In this animated ad, a Brooklyn bike commuter pedals across a bridge toward Manhattan, explaining that cycling affords him the same freedom he enjoys from his health care coverage. And to further identify with the target demo, there's even a little modal conflict at the end.
