DOT Working to Remove Reseda Blvd. Bike Lane
Ted Rogers, who's Biking In LA blog should be required reading for L.A. cyclists, has discovered a plot in the Valley to take out a Bike Lane on Resedal Blvd., along with street parking, to double the car-capacity of the road at rush hour. Apparently, traffic engineers in the West Valley Department of Transportation decided that not enough cyclists use the lane to justify its existance.

Another DIY Story: Bike Coaltion Doing Their Own Bike Counts
In yet another example of our bike culture's Do It Yourself ethic, the Los Angeles County Bike Coalition is planning to do its own bike counts to paint a clearer picture of how many people travel by bicycle in Los Angeles. Bike counts are a necessary feature of any well thought Bike Plan so that the planners and engineers can place the right sorts of engineering designs at the right places.

Is It Time for California to Adopt the “3-Feet-Law?”
More and more states are adopting laws that protect cyclists from passing cars by requiring that cyclists receive a three foot buffer on their left before any vehicle can pass them. According to a recent USA Today article, fourteen states and the District of Columbia have adopted the three-foot-law and it has already passed one legislative body in New Jersey.

BYO Bike Lanes Coming Soon
Via Gizmodo: A laser device that allows cyclists to project their own bike lanes has gone from cool idea to prototype. Positive reponse to the concept from Alex Tee and Evan Gant of Altitude Inc. was significant enough to put LightLane into production. See the beta version in action above. Thoughts?

Who Teaches the Teachers?
Public Safety officials continually lecture cyclists about the need to follow not just the letter of the law, but also to follow proven safety tips to stay safe during their rides. However, during a recent trip through the Downtown and in my own neighborhood, I've begun to notice anecdotal evidence that those charged with protecting us on the street don't know what those rules are.

Transit Coalition Backs Cyclists Right to Rail Cars
(Stephen Box has been leading the charge for a better bike plan on Metro trains than the "two bikes per car " rule that was proposed earlier this month. Pasadena Thinking of Taking a Car-Lane for Bikes and Peds. at Rose Bowl
A couple of years ago, the City of Pasadena considered banning bicycles from what they're now calling the "Rose Bowl Recreation Loop" because of the conflict being created between cyclists and car drivers. At the time the city sided with the drivers citing their "commutes" as more important than the cyclists and pedestrians using the loop as a public space. Pasadena's plan was hotly debated, but eventually shelved.

Bicycle Coalition “Living the Dream” on 4th Street
Recently the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition launched a series of local campaigns designed to highlight some "best practices" in bicycle design and planning. One of those campaigns focuses on re-engineering 4th Street as a Bike Boulevard in the Mid-Wilshire area, from where it begins on Hoover Street to where it ends on Alta Vista Blvd. at the Park LaBrea residential complex.
