Mainstreaming Bicycling, Lessons From Davis California
I’m returned to Santa Monica this week from attending the California by Bike Summit in Oakland, with the theme of mainstreaming the bike in California, and a few extra days in the Bay Area and San Francisco as well. There were numerous sessions and discussions with valuable lessons that will inform my writing, but I thought I would start with reflecting on the experience on day one, attending the optional bike tour of Davis California by way of the Amtrak Capital Corridor from Oakland. The tour was led by local advocates Steve and Emily Tracy of Davis Bicycles!.

The Looming Disaster of the Hyperion-Glendale Bridges Re-Design
Earlier this week, Streetsblog published an article about how the Hyperion-Glendale Complex of Bridges Rehabilitation Project was giving short shrift to bicyclists and pedestrians and everyone that lived in the area. At the time, based on information provided to us by the Bureau of Engineering, I assumed that the issue could be resolved by arguing for a complete streets approach to the right people.

Better Late Than Never: LaBonge and O’Farrell Celebrate Yucca Street, L.A.’s First Bike Friendly Street
In September of 2012, my son and I took a field trip to Hollywood not to see the tourist sites, but to ride on my bicycle back and forth on the .8 miles of Yucca Street, Los Angeles' first Bicycle Friendly Street. Earlier today, Los Angeles City Council Members Mitch O'Farrell and Tom LaBonge hosted a community bicycle ride to celebrate Yucca Street.

As we reported last week, the dangerousification of Spring Street is in full swing these days. With the City Council mandated water blasting of the Green Buffered Bike Lane completed, advocates wait for the city to install its completely untested, but less expensive, new paint design.

On Bike/Ped. Count Day, Bonin Introduces Motion Demanding Better Bike/Ped Data from the City
During last year's Park(ing) Day, City Council Members Jose Huizar and Jan Perry announced a city-wide parklet initiative. Following that lead, current Council Member Mike Bonin announced a new motion requiring better data collection after spending the morning volunteering with the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition/Los Angeles Walks counting bikes and walkers.
