The Week in Livable Streets Events

This might be the first week in a long time that the calendar doesn’t have a bike ride (note: ride added!). Are we missing something? Let us know…

• Wednesday – The California Highway Patrol, AAA and LACBC hold a press conference announcing the first day of the “three foot passing law.” The “Three-Feet-for-Safety Act” legally mandates that California motorists give bicyclists at least three feet of space when passing them on the road and also provides a way for law enforcement to enforce safe passing. Bill author, state Assemblymember Steven Bradford will also be present. • Wednesday – It’s not the most exciting meeting in the world, but apparently the City Council Transportation Committee holds hearings even when there’s not something exciting on the agenda. • Wednesday – Find out about and give your input on the very first all South Los Angeles CicLAvia. Meeting starts at 6:30pm at L.A. City Councilmember Curren Price’s Central Avenue Offices. More details here.
• Wednesday – The Sustainable City Plan Town Hall on the Westside has been postponed until further notice.
• Thursday – The Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, and Redondo Beach are working on a plan to recommend locations for bicycle mini-corrals. Join them for a public input meeting on Thursday September 11th to provide your suggestions. You may also visit www.southbaybikecorrals.org  to provide input, or get the meeting details, here.
• Saturday – Los Ryderz and East Side Riders host a Brotherhood Unity bike ride from Watts to Gardena and back. The ride is a a memorial for Benjamin Torres, killed in a hit and run crime in 2012. More details here.
• Saturday – Project 51: Play the L.A. River – a year-long celebration of the Los Angeles River kicks off this Saturday at Marsh Park, as part of the annual Frogtown Art Walk. See the nicest part of the river, and ask questions of SBLA’s in-house river nerd Joe Linton. Get the details, here.
• Saturday – Come explore the history and architecture of the Golden Age of Hollywood with Walking Ambassador JJ Hoffman. Whitley Heights was designed by the Grandfather of Hollywood Hobart Whitley specifically for Hollywood’s most glamorous residents. Stars like Rudolph Valentino, Barbara LaMarr, Maurice Chevalier, and Betty Davis lived there. Proceeds from the walk benefit L.A. Walks. Get the details, here. Purchase tickets, here.
