Eyes on the Street: Spring/Alameda Bikeway Construction
The city of Los Angeles Transportation Department (LADOT) is adding protected bike lanes on Alameda and Spring Streets in downtown Los Angeles’ Chinatown. The Spring/Alameda Safety & Mobility Project extends 1.2 miles from Los Angeles Street – at Union Station – to Wilhardt Street near the L.A. River. The area is represented by pro-bike/walk City Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez.
The new Spring/Alameda bikeway will connect to Union Station, the Metro E Line Chinatown Station, and L.A. State Historic Park. It will close a gap between the L.A. River path and Union Station – via on-street bikeways on Avenue 19 and North Broadway/North Spring.
LADOT plans to install concrete Toronto Barrier protection along at least some of the protected bike lanes, including at Chinatown Station and L.A. State Historic Park. The project will also add new signalized pedestrian crossing at Ann Street.
Construction got underway in late July. It appears that most of the work to date has been to repair and retrofit sidewalks, including upgrading wheelchair access ramps.
Today Streetsblog spotted a completed new bus stop island – with protected bike lane – on Alameda at the Chinatown A Line Station.
The project is under construction, and anticipated to be complete in 2027. LADOT is requesting that interested people give input on the Spring/Alameda project via an online survey, which closes August 31.
