Cartoon Friday: Beware
On February 19, 2010, the Portland City Council passed a Bike Plan. Just like we saw this week, Portland's Mayor announced a funding mechanism to make the plan a reality. For Portland, it was the $20 million "kickstart." For Los Angeles, it's the steady trickle of Measure R local return funds. But nevertheless, the day after Portland passed its Bike Plan, the super-blog Bike Portland printed this cartoon. Consider it part joke, part history lesson and part warning.

How Los Angeles Advocates Are Rallying for Regional Funding Reform
Yesterday, Streetsblog looked at the funding differences in the long range planning in the San Diego County Region as compared to the "SCAG 6-County Mega-Region" that includes Los Angeles. But instead of looking at the success in San Diego and going "why not us," a group of advocates, notably Gloria Ohland and Beth Steckler at Move L.A. and Jessica Meaney at the Safe Routes to Schools National Partnership, is fighting to secure billions for active transportation in the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) long range transportation plan.

EPA: Energy Efficiency Is About Location, Location, Location
Where we live has an enormous impact on energy use, according to new research commissioned by the EPA. The report, "Location Efficiency and Housing Type -- Boiling It Down to BTUs" finds that Americans use far less energy if they live in an apartment building in a transit-oriented neighborhood than if they live in a detached suburban house, even if that house has green building features and sports fuel-efficient cars in the driveway.

Senate Passes Transportation Extension
The Senate has passed the Surface Transportation Extension Act, extending SAFETEA-LU for the seventh time and keeping the transportation program going at current spending levels. The House passed the bill yesterday.
