Governor Signs Surfliner/LOSSAN Reorganization Bills
Saturday, Governor Brown signed the two bills (SB 1225 and AB 1779) to facilitate local agencies assuming management of the Pacific Surfliner and San Joaquin intercity-rail routes. Streetsblog previously published an an in-depth piece exploring the history and challenges involved.

Next New FlyAway Route to LAX Will Serve Expo La Brea station
In 2004 Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) [the L.A. city department that operates LAX, Van Nuys and Ontario airports] as part of what is known as the LAX Master Plan Mitigation Monitoring and Reporting Program reached with opponents of LAX expansion agreed that by 2015 the FlyAway system will be expanded to nine routes. This is proving a challenging (and expensive) goal to work toward. Recently the Irvine route was discontinued due to low ridership (albeit a nonstop shuttle service is promised as an eventual replacement).

A Tale of Two Maps
Park(ing) Day has been one of the most-hyped events in Los Angeles (and on Los Angeles Streetsblog) for years. However, perhaps do in part to CicLAvia as an open streets event or the city's decision to create pocket parks on its own, the day has lost some of its fizzle. In years past, Streetsblog received literally dozens of press releases announcing temporary parks being created for Park(ing) Day. Sure, Park(ing) Day did get some press in the Times, but I don't think anyone would say it's the same as previous years.

Science Center Given Approval to Remove Nearly 400 Trees to Make Way for Shuttle
When I first reported on the notices posted on trees along Crenshaw Blvd. back in July, I did not realize that those notices were more or less the extent of the outreach the Science Center had done with the communities that the Space Shuttle Endeavour would be traveling through.

A Party and Ride/Walk Linked to Fresh Food Opportunities Just South of USC this Weekend
If you've been paying attention to our calendar, you already know that RideSouthLA and Community Services Unlimited, Inc. (CSU) are holding a Healthy Food Ride this Sunday, Sept 9. The ride/walk event is designed to take participants on a tour through the neighborhood and show them the fresh food opportunities that do exist in the area. The ride/walk meet-up site is Mercado La Paloma (3655 S Grand Ave), and the event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
