Los Angeles is famous for its street vending culture, especially for the high quality food options available on many street corners, but every time a vendor takes to the streets, he or she is breaking city law. This has led to thousands of struggling low-income entrepreneurs being penalized with hefty fines, confiscated equipment, and even incarceration.

And, every time I roll through there, I feel like I and everything around me are being liberally coated in layers of grime.

When I saw the older African-American gentleman standing next to the Dunbar (located in Central Avenue's historic jazz corridor) Sunday morning, holding a mug and observing us as we rode up alongside it, I gave him a big smile and a nod.
