Memo to Metro (the sequel): Service Change Proposal Details Still Lacking
I was gratified that my commentary Memo to Metro: “Additional Details” on Bus Cuts AWOL provoked illuminating comments plus at the behest of The Source's Fred Camino Metro updated its website adding a link to the additional details I had futilely sought. Chalk one up for L.A. Streetsblog helping make the world a better place.

Review of Last Week’s Metro “Service Enhancement” Hearings
The Feb. 1st "all regions" public hearing for the June service change proposals had a good turnout. My estimate is it started with about 150 attendees and even with comments limited to just a minute per speaker the whole thing took some 2 and a half hours.

Cut or Restore? Metro Bus Service Changes for June 2011
(In advance of the kickoff of tonight's hearings on Metro's bus cut hearings, Faramarz Nabavi was nice enough to send along some very well researched comments on behalf of The Transit Coalition. If you care about bus cuts, take a moment to sit down and read through. - DN)

Metro Proposes More Cuts to Bus System
Earlier this week, Metro announced another set of proposed cuts to its bus system. Following so soon on the cuts from just last month, Metro CEO Art Leahy took to The Source to defend the changes. Oddly, rather than defend the good work being done by the bus division at Metro and push for the state to finally restore funds pledged to transit operations but spent on closing a gap in the general fund. Instead, he tries to sell the cancellation of nine bus routes and reductions on dozens more.

Metro Pokes SCAG. Endorses Higher Standards for SB375 Clean Air Emissions.
Earlier this month, the Board of the Southern California Association of Governments (S.C.A.G.) rejected the long-term clean air targets for Southern California requested by the Air Resources Board and recommended by their own staff. While today's Metro Board Meeting featured good news for cyclists and bad news for bus riders, there was another hot debate over what goals for reducing Greenhouse Gas should be set for Southern California. You can read the motion here.

Federal Civil Rights Review Raises Governance Questions at MTC
The long-term impacts to transportation funding as a result of the Federal Transit Administration's (FTA) civil rights compliance probe
of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) won't be clear for
some time, but the action by the federal administration has
transportation policy circles buzzing. Experts in civil rights and
regional planning policy couldn't point to
another instance of a metropolitan planning organization (MPO) like the
MTC being required to submit to similar scrutiny from the FTA, while
social justice
advocates felt vindicated for their longstanding contention of
discrimination in transportation funding.

Metro Tips Its Hand on Endangered Bus Lines
Metro doesn't usually do major changes to its bus service for contractual reasons with the bus driver's union except for twice a year. The next time major changes, including some line eliminations or service scale backs isn't due to be until the winter. But that doesn't mean it's too early to start figuring out which lines are most likely to be cut back or eliminated.
