Book Sample: Boyle Heights High School Students Empowered to Change Their Neighborhood Through the Written Word
Last week, 826LA, a non profit tutoring and writing service for youth, released a collection of stories written by 10th grade Roosevelt High School students to answer the question "What needs to change to generate more justice and equity in Boyle Heights?" In "Like A Shadow Blocking My Light," the students' stories deal with the problems teenagers face in growing up in the neighborhood - one student writes about his father abandoning the family, another about the lack of available healthy food sources and still another about a young immigrant's struggles to adapt in an English-speaking world.

Full Disclosure on the Relationship Between L.A. Streetsblog and Metro
A lot is being made of the relationship between Streetsblog and Metro (aka Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority or MTA) after our post dismantling a Beverly Hills Courier "report" published yesterday. The Beverly Hills Courier referred to L.A. Streetsblog as a "captive blog" of Metro and is now suggesting that everything we say is direct from the mouth of the MTA. It's a level of confusion on the Courier's part that you might expect from commenters at Andrew Breitbart's Big Government website.
