No Surprise Here: Drivers Don’t Want to Pay Higher Gas Taxes
Just last month, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave U.S. infrastructure another dismal grade and every media outlet and lawmaker in the country, it seemed, bellyached about how we need to invest more. And then Gallup asked Americans if they’d be willing to raise the gas tax by 20 cents a gallon. The answer was a big, fat, “No.”

King of CicLAvia: Richie Trimble’s 14.5 ft. Tall Bike!
In addition to the 150,000 cyclists that took to Venice Blvd. on Sunday, at CicLAvia VI: CicLAvia To the Sea, the "King of CicLAvia" was crowned. The crown was not awarded by the event-creators, but by the buzz surrounding Richie Trimble's over a hundred pound, 14.5 foot - to the seat, 17 foot - to eye level, tall bike: "STOOPID TALL" aka "Big Boy" as it made its way from La Cienega to Venice beach.

The Opportunity Costs of Highway Expansion
In case you haven't heard, gas tax revenues aren't what they used to be. In this kind of fiscally-constrained environment, every dollar spent on big, expensive transportation projects is a dollar that won't be spent on smaller but smarter local transportation needs. Yet around the country, mega-highway plans conceived in a different era continue to march forward as if nothing has changed.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told members of Congress last week that U.S. DOT would be announcing TIGER V on Friday. He kept us in suspense through the weekend, but here it is: $474 million for innovative transportation projects that don’t necessarily fit neatly under other funding programs.
