Senate’s Draft Transpo Bill Ends Earmarks But Weakens Bike-Ped Programs
Last Friday, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee released its draft transportation reauthorization bill. With the GOP-controlled House contemplating a national transportation policy designed for maximum fossil fuel consumption, the best opportunities for reform reside in the Senate.

Metro Boosts Late Evening Train Service
Earlier today, Metro unveiled its "More Trains More Often," program for trains on the Red, Purple and Blue lines. Currently, trains are running every 20 minutes after 8:00 P.M., but under the new program trains will run every 10 minutes all the way until midnight. After midnight, service will run every twenty minutes until service suspension at 1:00 A.M. "More Trains More Often" will begin on November 13.

City Not Looking to Ban Bikes on Sidewalks, But Staff and Council Want Some Clarification
(Note: Statistically speaking, riding a bicycle on a sidewalk isn't a safe way to bicycle versus the street. However, for many novice or otherwise inexperienced riders the sidewalk is the only place they feel safe riding. The below piece discusses the safety concerns for pedestrians, but sidewalk riding poses some danger for cyclists as well. - DN)

FRA Safety Regs Add Costs, Not Safety, to American Rail
The Federal Railroad Administration is an increasingly frequent target for Streetsblog Network members. Writers including Alon Levy at Pedestrian Observations and the mysterious "Drunk Engineer" who pens Systemic Failure have called out FRA safety regulations as irrational and out-of-date, adding unnecessary costs to rail operations and preventing the modernization of Amtrak and commuter rail systems.

West LA Advocates Urge Rec. and Parks Commission to Support Re-Opening Bundy Triangle Park
For those just joining the discussion, a group of activists in West Los Angeles has been working with the office of Los Angeles Dist. 11 Councilman Bill Rosendahl since April to re-open Bundy Triangle Park. This rare swath of green space in dense West LA sits at the intersection of Bundy Drive, Santa Monica Boulevard and Ohio Avenue.
