SoCal Cutting Back on School Buses
The Times reports that Southern California school districts are cutting back on school bus funding to help balance their budgets. In some areas, the urban design style so "popular" in Southern California has led those students unfortunate enough to lose their bus options no choices besides the private automobile for transport or not going to school at all. Unsurprisingly, these cuts are proving less than popular.

Examining Google’s Walking Directions
While I give Google Walking a thumbs up, it comes with the usual caveat that it's not a replacement for local knowledge. If you're using it for a new place, make sure to have a backup plan in case local conditions aren't reflected by the map. After all, this is just a Beta launch.

The House of Representatives recently passed a bill that would provide emergency funding to local transit systems facing simultaneous increases in ridership and fuel costs. The legislation is now stalled in the Senate. The Bush Administration has made clear their distaste for funding mass transit operating costs. They say they don't want local transit systems to become dependent on federal subsidies. Meanwhile, when it comes to subsidizing Midwestern farmers and the operating costs of America's fleet of private motor vehicles... well, here's how Michael Daly of the Daily News summed it up in his column yesterday:
