The Week In…

Big week coming up.  The Metro Board meeting promises some highlights, the Transportation Committee is going to talk the Bike Plan and Damien is allowed out of the westside for a forum on parking with the AIA.

The devastating local impact of fracking might be one of the most important, and least discussed, major environmental issues in Southern California.  Sahra Sulaiman covered a recent meeting between Baldwin Hills residents and the government agency allegedly overseeing the fracking going on in local oil fields.  To say she was dissapointed and concerned is an understatement.  There are two local events on fracking this week.  If you live in or near Culver City or Long Beach, pay attention.

Sorry for the delay in getting up this week's installment of The Week in Livable Streets Events.  As it turns out, the pause was a good thing.  We got some important event information just yesterday.

Let's just jump right in, shall we?

Tuesday - I bet there's a lot of great events scheduled for May Day that would be of interest to the Livable Streets community.  Let us know if we've missed any in the comments section.  East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, Pacoima Beautiful, Communities for Better Environment, and La Causa, along with community members from the South East Los Angeles area will be marching in solidarity with migrant and workers’ rights.  The march starts at 1:00 P.M. at Olympic and Broadway.  Get the details, here.

Tuesday - The Transit Coalition holds their monthly meeting at Metro Headquarters.  Get the details on guest speakers and food order arrangements and all the rest of the news that you need right here.

Along with Park(ing) Day and CicLAvia, Earth Day has always been one of the best holidays on the Livable Streets Calendar.  Whether it's going on a bike ride, or planting a tree, there are literally thousands of ways to make the world a greener, better place right in your local community.

The next two weeks tend to be quieter than usual with Easter and Passover celebrations and services popping up on the schedule.  Nevertheless, there are some big ones out there, including decision day at SCAG.
