Anger and Optimism Expressed Over BMP Maps
Last Friday, the city released the first piece of its Bike Master Plan when it posted the draft area maps that will make up the framework of the engineering portion of the Plan. "Word on the street" is that the City's Planning Department , the body that is in charge of the BMP despite the widely held belief that it's the LADOT Bikeways Division, didn't want to release the plan piecemeal.
If the reaction from advocates and bloggers is any indication of the general feelings towards the plan, then the instinct to withhold wasn't a bad one.

City Starts to Release Bike Plan
Yesterday afternoon, the City of Los Angeles began the slow roll out of the Bike Master Plan by emailing members of Neighborhood Councils a letter announcing that the maps that will be the framework of the engineering portion of the BMP are available for public viewing on their website and at other public places around town.

Whither the Bike Master Plan?
You may have noticed that recently I've been finding a way to work the oft-delayed Bike Master Plan into just about every post about bicycles. This being Bike to Work Week, there have been plenty of chances.

Will We See the New Bike Master Plan in April?
Over the weekend, at the Bike Summit, one question I was asked over and over again why we haven't seen the newest draft of the city's Bike Master Plan, which was originally promised for August of 2008 then delayed until January of this year, still hasn't been released. A quick e-mail to LADOT senior bike coordinator Michelle Mowery helped me find out the new timeline from City Planning: the BMP is now on-track for a release to the public next month and should be voted on by the City Council in June. In the meantime, a compilation of comments and suggested routes can be found at the BMP's official website.
