News from the Summit: Dude, Where’s My Bike Plan?
The StreetSummit workshop update on the Draft Bike Plan was very much a good news and bad news sort of event. On one hand, the newest Draft of the plan looks better than the one released last summer. On the other hand, after listening to Janette Sadik-Khan and Charlie Gandy rallying the troops earlier in the day; it was a stark reminder of just how far we have to go.

LACBC Bike Counts: Strong Relationship Between Infrastructure and Riders on the Road
Oftentimes, cyclists find themselves arguing with non-cyclists about many different facets of life riding the streets of Los Angeles. Cyclists ride the wrong way, spending money on bike lanes are a waste of money, cycling is just something people do to be trendy or exercise; these false arguments get repeated so often that non-cyclists, even ones sympathetic to the cause of safer streets for cycling, found themselves believing it.

Mowery and the LADOT Have a Chance to Connect with Cycling Community through the Backbone
Last Thursday, KPCC's Patt Morrison aired a piece showcasing the Backbone Bikeway Network as presented by guests Alex Thompson and Mihai Petieu. I chuckled when I saw Alex Thompson’s tweet announcing that he was appearing “opposite” guest Michelle Mowery the LADOT Sr. Bike Coordinator because I knew the exchange would get fiery and rightfully so. Mowery has come under a lot of fire from the cycling community for not being an outright bulldog for cyclists. One gets the feeling she is afraid for her job should she get too rowdy over there at the LADOT. After eight to ten minutes of show debilitating glitches with the KPCC call in system things were finally on their way.

Advocates Love the Backbone Bikeway Network
Since the maps for the Backbone Bikeway Network burst on to the scene last week, it seems that the discussing the maps, the Backbone, and the concepts and theories behind it is all anyone in the cycling movement wants to do. Following up on Tuesday's story, I had the chance to speak with, or email with, many of the advocates and leaders of the bicycling movement in Los Angeles. The near unanimous verdict? They love it.

What Is the Backbone Bikeway Network and Why Is It So Important?
Last week, the LA Bike Working Group began to release parts of "L.A.'s Best Bike Plan" in the form of the Backbone Bikeway Network maps and started a new conversation about the state of bike planning in Los Angeles. The maps, first published on three members of the steering committee's blogs, moved to LAist and then on to the mainstream media.

Times Asks: Should L.A. Give Cyclists More Space on the Road
I was waiting to write about "L.A.'s Best Bike Plan's" Bike Backbone Network that's was slowly rolled out over the last week until all three maps were public. In the meantime, the Los Angeles Times and KPCC have picked up on part of the story, getting some of the major details wrong. The Bike Backbone Network was never about building a lot of new bike infrastructure, it was about declaring the streets that make up the Backbone as the main thorofares for cyclists to commute and move around town. But much more on that tomorrow...

Every Street is a Bike Route
Late last year I participated in the Crenshaw Crush ride which had riders of ages, from 4 to 64, participating. The route took us from major arterials like Crenshaw Boulevard to little neighborhood side streets, and through the Olympic Village.

L.A. County Holds First Bike Advisory Committee…But It’s Hidden from the Public
The County of Los Angeles is working on a Bike Plan and, under the
guidance of Alta Planning, has embarked on the journey by convening a
Bicycle Advisory Committee, complete with instructions that the public
is not invited. In light of the fact that the majority of the BAC
members are appointed by elected officials, in this case County
Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky, Gloria Molina, Mark Ridley-Thomas, Don
Knabe, Michael D. Antonovich, it would seem that an open and
transparent process would be the minimum and that a robust public
process would be the goal. Such is not the case.

If L.A. Is Going to Invest in Bike Lanes, Then Do It Right!
Bike Lanes are a deterrent for me to ride in and I oftentimes cringe when I hear people blindly supporting them without asking for enhanced safety standards and regulations.

Bike Master Plan Comments Due Friday: Here’s Mine
This Friday, comments are due on the Draft Bike Plan lovingly prepared by Alta Planning and Design and submitted for public perusal and comments by City Planning and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation. I've gotten some criticism from critics of the Bike Plan for not writing more about it myself, and instead writing "just the facts" reviews of meetings, even though Streetsblog has hosted blistering critiques of the plan by Stephen Box and Joe Linton. The few supporters of the plan have urged me to write up some good news about the plan. Below are the comments I'll be emailing to City Planning, through the "unofficial" Bike Plan website at http://labikeplan.com. You can also submit comments through that site or the official site at http://labikeplan.org.
