Eyes on the Street: Side Effect of the 405 Widening, Better Bike Lanes on the Westside
We've spent a lot of blog space questioning the value of the mammoth I-405 Widening Project, but the project has brought some good news to cyclists on the Westside. Via twitter, Rach Stevenson announced that the southbound bike lane on Ohio Boulevard by the V.A.'s office has been restriped and moved out of the gutter. Before this welcome change, Biking In L.A. referred to this bike lane as "the worst bike lane on the Westside."

Bicyclists/LAPD Issues Bike Theft Alert
The LAPD/Cyclists Task Force has released a "Bike Theft Alert" to encourage and educate cyclists on the many ways to best secure your bicycle. There are a few nitpicks I have with the two page flyer, I think Streetfilms' bike locking expert would have kittens at the thought of someone locking their bike with just a U-Lock, but as cycling becomes more and more common we're going to continue to see bike theft become a larger and larger problem. It's good to see the LAPD taking an active interest in preventing bike thefts instead of just dealing with the issue after the fact. And it's double good to see them working with the community to put out the best flyer that's possible.

An Open Letter to the Cycling Community
Thanksgiving Day is only a week away and already I have been contemplating the many things I have to be thankful for. Earlier this year, on January 6th, I was involved in a hit-and-run while cycling to work. As I was being strapped to a stretcher and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, I was unaware that the events of the morning were being shared rapidly through Twitter, email, phone calls, and later that day through blogs. Thanks to these communications my wife and family were able to meet me at the hospital well before I would have been able to contact them myself.

Councilman Smith on Wilbur Road Diet: Bike Lanes Safe, Road Diet Under Scrutiny
The surprise appearance of a Road Diet and new bike lanes on Wilbur Ave earlier this year caused quite a stir. In addition to the roar from local drivers, the LADOT's outreach process has come under such fire from the local Councilman, that he proposed new laws that would require the neighborhood approval before any transportation project was completed on a local street.

Updating the Bike Plan: Well, How Did I Get Here?
An internet search didn't find any other accounts of the proposed bike plan update turning Los Angeles into a world-class bike city. Critiques of the plan have been considerably less effusive than the staff report, calling it "an entertaining and inspiring experience that bears no connection to reality" (Bikeside) and "a bunch of phoney bloney jargon to hide the fact that there are no real plans [for bike lanes on major streets]" (Brayj Against the Machine.) Even supportive articles include qualifications "... a step in the right direction ... we are requesting that Planning and DOT ... show further commitment" (LACBC) and "I like a lot of what I see in the draft plan, though." (Biking in LA)
