Following up on the success of the 12th Annual River Ride, and the ongoing success of its regional partnership program; the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition looks to recruit local Livable Streets advocates to fight for safe streets in their communities. The new Neighborhood Bike Ambassador program seeks to educate and empower cyclists to fight for implementation of the Bike Plan on their local streets in their local communities. Over the summer, LACBC will begin to recruit ambassadors before organizing

Cheviot Homeowners File Second Suit Against Expo Bikeway
A group of Cheviot Hills residents who's property abuts the proposed Expo Bikeway on the Westside of Los Angeles have filed suit for the second time in two years alleging that environmental clearances given the bikeway were given in error. Their first lawsuit, filed in June 2010, resulted in the City of Los Angeles and Caltrans reversing their original environmental clearance decisions and re-working their studies. The bikeway was granted a second environmental clearance, known as a Categorical Exclusion (CE), in November of 2011.

The State Senate Decides Whether to “Give Me 3” on Thursday
Senate Bill 1464, the three-foot bike passing bill proposed by California Senator Alan Lowenthal (D-Long Beach), heads back to the Senate on Thursday, May 24 after sailing through committee last week. Buoyed by a strong campaign by the California Bike Coalition (CBC) and TransForm, thousands of supporters have already written letters to their senators urging them to pass the bill.

New York Times Focuses on Biking in L.A., Makes Some Space for L.A. Streetsblog
In the Sunday edition, the New York Times put aside a little space to talk about bicycling in Los Angeles. The article points to a boom in the popularity of bicycling throughout the city and gives the credit where it belongs: the advocates and ride leaders that created today's bicycle culture.

Add a Green Buffered Bike Lane and Number of Cyclists Explode
Yesterday, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition released "2011 City of Los Angeles Bicycle & Pedestrian Count Report" and a separate study on bicycling on Spring Street in the Green Buffered Bike Lane. The result? Cycling in the city is on the upswing, as positive press, CicLAvia and new infrastructure are encouraging more people to embrace two-wheeled travel.

Sad Truth: We’ll Never Know What Happened to Susanna Schick
It's been two weeks since the LAPD closed their investigation into the April 6th bicycle crash that left Susanna Schick hospitalized with broken ribs, concussions and other injuries. Schick claims that the driver of a white Lexus ran her down from behind in the late night crash. The LAPD claims she fell off her bicycle. The police basically refused to investigate the crash, despite press reports promising a thorough investigation, and because Schick claims a hit and run, there will likely never be true resolution to the crash.
