The Fitness Gap: Americans Walk Far Less Than People in Other Countries
There's a clear link between inactivity and obesity in America. And then there's the connection between inactivity and a car based-lifestyle, streets that discourage walking and biking, low prioritization of transit, and so forth. Recent research has shown that places where active commuting is more common have lower rates of obesity.

Angela Glover Blackwell on Equity, Infrastructure, and the President
On Monday, President Obama talked infrastructure with two governors, eight mayors, four former transportation secretaries (and the current one), two labor leaders – and one public interest advocate. That advocate was Angela Glover Blackwell, founder of the think tank PolicyLink and chair of the Transportation for America Equity Caucus, which launched last week. The roundtable discussed the president's $50 billion infrastructure proposal, which is galvanizing transportation reformers as the contours come into sharper focus.

It’s Official, Beverly Hills Takes Position Against Subway Alignment Under Their City
Earlier this week, Metro staff released its recommendations for the Locally Preferred Alternatives for the Westside Subway. While a proposed spur of the Purple Line through Wests Hollywood and the idea of extending the subway "To the Sea" were shelved for now; the final route for the last leg of the extension, i.e. whether it will have a stop at Constellation Avenue or Santa Monica Boulevard in Santa Monica, was left unresolved for further study.

Five Reasons Reformers Are Rallying Behind Obama’s Transpo Push
When President Obama announced his push for a long-term transportation bill on Monday, he introduced a report by his Council of Economic Advisors and the Treasury Department analyzing the economic impact of infrastructure investment [PDF]. At face value, the numbers in the president's plan might not look so impressive. It calls for rebuilding 150,000 miles of roads, laying and maintaining 4,000 miles of railways, and the restoration of 150 miles of airport runways.
