Metro Orange Line Bike Surveys
In December, Metro postponed its call for volunteers to do an
official bike study on the Valley’s Orange Line – the only bus rapid
transit line in the county with its own dedicated bike path. Well,
spring has arrived, and this study is now scheduled for the end of
March.

Why Are Cyclists Included in Distracted Driving Bill?
A
bill introduced last month by State Senator Joe Simitian (D-Palo Alto),
who has been a steady advocate for reducing the dangers of distracted
driving, would increase first-time and repeat fines for drivers who
text while driving or who don’t use hands-free devices, and would
extend the prohibition of cell phone use to cyclists. This last move
has cycling advocates baffled and on the defensive.

Times Writes on a Day in the Life of a Bike Riding Day Laborer
This morning, while preparing "Today's Headlines" I came across a story in the Times about cyclist Jose Guzman, our friend Ramon Martinez and a day in the life of a day laborer on a bike. I thought the story was a good narrative, and was probably a more relevant story about what happens every day in L.A. than the story about bus riders earlier in the week; but it was missing one thing.

A Review of the Metro Sector Governance Council’s Meet and Confer
(Author's note: this write-up was delayed when I was hit with a particular vicious bout of flu that made me bed ridden for 9 days. But since no one in the media (including Metro's own bloggers!) attended it is still timely and informative as the sole coverage of this event. - DG)

LaHood Faces Off With GOP Senator Over High-Speed Rail, Livability
When Cabinet secretaries appear in front of Congress' appropriations
committees, which control the annual budgets for each federal agency,
the proceedings tend to be dry affairs dominated by local concerns and
arcane fiscal debates.

Whose Lifestyle Is It Anyway?
As malls have struggled over the last 20 years or so to stay culturally
relevant -- or even profitable -- one of the solutions that has gained
ground is the "lifestyle center." These are malls with sidewalks and
sidewalk musicians, European-style fountains, open-air restaurants, and
of course, lots of shopping. They are prefab places masquerading as
real places. Check out this 2006 piece from Slate and you'll get the idea.
