the inland empire is actually making decent strides in commuter rail. it’s all under the radar, but Riverside County is laying the groundwork for a ( perhaps in my lifetime ) first rate rail system centered around TOD.

  • RCTC is building some housing near some of the train stations and Riverside is about to approve several projects around the Downtown Riverside station. Unfortunately, RCTC thinks that parking is the best way to surround the stations, so there’s a lot of valuable land in Perris that is covered in asphalt.

SANBAG is also seeking to promote and enhance TOD along the San Bernardino Line, which they’re calling the ARRIVE Corridor. Arguably, it’s in a better position for TOD than RCTC since the San Bernardino Line already has more (frequent) trains and once the Gold Line to Montclair is finished, will also provide a direct connection to the SGV, even for commuters from Riverside.

parking craters are a definate pathology. Even worse are massive parking garages like in Corona. At least a parking crater can be easily built on. A multi story parking garage is a forever blight.

But I’ll give them credit for at least beginning.
