Oh my goodness, we should be careful crossing the streets, they're getting more and more dangerous.

Today Glenn Gritzner was found guilty of hit&run and damage to property.
Lets make sure his name is spelled right "Glenn Gritzner" so that that he can receive a little google justice as well.

Wow what prick!!! A hit and run is always considered a felony, isn't it? I'm confused. Leaving the scene of an accident while injuring another she be a no brainer, right? How is the penalty for this less or equal in severity to a DUI? Our system is fucked up. I just looked it up.

If you hit somebody and as long as they are not seriously injured, your better off running. The penalty is not much worse than a DUI. This is California law. Isn't that amazing!!!

This is why there are so many hit and runs. There are no consequences. All you get is a slap in the wrist.

"Glen is someone who understands the needs of cyclists and through his work at the Collaborative, helped improve cycling conditions in LA."

That is a fascinating tidbit.
But sometimes people job, advocate, and vote differently from how than they ACT.

From his actions so far, it seems like he will do whatever he can to wiggle out of his responsibility.

Maybe he feels like he earned enough carbon credits through his transportation work that he can leave another human being in the street for dead.

I sincerely hope justice prevails. fuck him.

Thanks for sharing this story and for all of the comments made (I'm a little behind in catching up on my Streetsblog LA RSS feed which is why I'm responding several days after the post was made).

I'm really sorry that Roadblock had to experience the trauma of a hit and run and am glad he's ok. I'm really impressed with everything he's done since the crash and wish him the best as he moves forward in what I'm sure is a very difficult process.

It sounds like this crash has raised the awareness of the ongoing hazards of hit and runs in Los Angeles (a mentor and friend of mine was hit and killed several years ago so this is an issue I care especially about). I'm glad to hear discussions have focused on potential solutions to this ongoing crisis and am thrilled that so many people are taking action, and that its getting broader coverage in other media outlets as well.

I'm optimistic things will improve and think this particular situation has the potential to transform things in a very positive way for LA.

At the risk of being critized for defending a hit-and-run driver, I want to share the following with folks following this issue: Many years ago, I worked across the hall from Glen Gritzner (he co-directed the Transportation and Land Use Collaborative while I directed the LA County Bicycle Coalition). Ironically given the current situation, Glen is someone who understands the needs of cyclists and through his work at the Collaborative, helped improve cycling conditions in LA.

We all know that small, careless mistakes can lead to deadly consequences when driving. If Glen is indeed responsible for hitting Roadblock, it's up for the courts to decide what to do. Out of any hit-and-run driver though, Glen is someone who I can see becoming a real champion to prevent future hit-and-runs in Los Angeles. Those following this issue ought to consider how there's a potential here for Glen to become a champion for bicycling and use his connections to work towards positive change to cycling conditions in Los Angeles. Maybe that could be part of the plea-bargaining?

Above all, refrain from doing anything to create sympathy for the defendent. The City Attorney is actually prosecuting this suspect. Justice is slow. Patience is required.

Here is every blog that Glenn Gritzner posted on The Amature Enthusiast cached in google's wonderous archive. Get em while they're hot (and before he petitions google to remove the cahce!) Reading through just the headlines..The man was DRINKER. Obviously this doesn't prove that Gritzner was drunk on the night of his alleged crime, but it sure does make a damn interesting read!

"As to Gritzner coming here to defend himself, I'd wager the possibilities of that happening are between never and over his lawyers' dead bodies."

Of course. Send him a message? He'll delete it. Comment on his blog? He did delete those comments and has locked down his social networking sites. So what's the harm?

Say whatever you want to him (no threats, obviously), because you'll always have the moral high ground when you say, "I never ran anybody over and left the scene." Boo-hoo he might get some angry emails, haha.

Spokker, agreed: citizen reporting is viable and vital. The intent of my statement you partially represent was to knock those very outlets, not the important work done by Damien here at Streetsblog. I remember the good old days when stories of City Hall insiders made to defend themselves against criminal charges would find their way into newspages and newscasts. I get all wistful just thinking about it.

As to Gritzner coming here to defend himself, I'd wager the possibilities of that happening are between never and over his lawyers' dead bodies.

Uh oh. Mr. Gritzner has made his blog invite only, locked his Twitter, and removed his Facebook. Those are pretty standard steps in situations like this these days- particularly DUI cases.

Luckily there are plenty of cached blog postings and if I were you Roadblock, I would make sure to get as many of them saved as possible. I read through a few of them and the fact that they all mentioned drinking downtown sets a pattern a lawyer would love to sink his teeth into.

Subpoena his phone records and credit card statements. In fact, it could be very quite easy to get in touch with the bartender who served him drinks. Even if he never took a Breathalyzer, a bartender's testimony could make up for it.

"I agree with Roadblock not to contact the suspect -- unless you're a reporter with any of the local media outlets"

Citizen reporting is just as legit as the usual media outlets, if not more so these days.

I would send him a polite email asking him to come to this blog and defend himself. If he doesn't like it he'll delete it, just as he did the comments on his blog.

I, for one, would like to know if my significant other was so heartless as to run someone over and flee the scene of an accident. I would leave my partner over such an incident.

Oh Will, the nail head never has a chance with you around. Thank goodness for Streetsblog getting the story out. (And Roadblock for being such a wise fellow.)
