The FRA is probably the right organization to be responsible for this, but they need to be reorganized and most likely better funded. There are a number of areas where national standards would be beneficial but the FRA hasn't updated their recommendations. In addition to train control standards, things like platform loading height standards for level-boarding, electrification standards, light weight and high speed passenger rail safety standards (as opposed to just giving exemptions), standards for anything over 150mph, light weight freight standards, etc. etc. etc.

Here comes the safety police again!

Why not stop there lets go after the airlines, grade separating roads around every school, protect suicidal people jumping in front of subway trains or jumping off bridges or off buildings or slitting their wrists or putting their heads in ovens or putting a gun in their mouths and drug overdoses...

Please let Elana know that California is nothing to be modeled. 4 out of 5 of the deadliest light rail systems and two of the deadliest commuter rail systems all operate under the watch of the CPUC.
