This is the sort of thing that sounds nice but longer term might not work out. What about the funds from meters that are supposed to pay for much needed parking structures that could be used by businesses thus getting around the city's requirement for parking which does not exist and possibly leased to people that have no parking? The solution to structural budget issues is not one time "fixes" but rather where is the problem and how to reduce the impact. Privative the collection but not the revenue. A better place to privative would be trash collection since this is a net negative on the general fund.

This is such a ridiculous sellout of the public interest. We, the people, own the infrastructure that we'll be paying a private corporation to use until it is broken. The Mexican government has had a terrible string of privatized highways built at public expense. I can't believe we're this desperate for cash. There is a lot of departmental fat to cut in L.A.

I am a becoming a bigger and bigger proponent of melting the LADOT into ingots and distributing it to different departments. The firing of all those administrative types and HR people alone would save a couple of hundred million. How about pushing that Mr. Mayor?

I even wrote a hand-waving blog post about it during last year's budget season:

don't want to sound too critical off the bat, but it seems like we've already decided that privatization is the way to go, and that now it's just a matter of how best to do it. i mean, why not consider the trillion other solutions to raising money?

can streetsblog save LA???
