I think it’s a political issue now. We bicyclists need to put some political heat on mayor and the council to get that plan done (and to keep it from getting de-fanged.) We’re going to miss all the opportunities in the stimulus and the federal transportation authorization if we wait any longer.

Not that’s it’s an excuse, but it may be a partial explanation: public consultation is really expensive (especially if you want wide-reaching promotion). If they’ve got budget issues, switching to one-on-one meetings would help. Especially if previous public meetings were unproductive.

Just tossing that out there for people to mull over.

It’s really easy to ask for more public meetings and demand that they be widely advertised and held in lots of spots on lots of dates, and, ideally, that would happen. But if your public consultation budget is tiny, what can you do? Ads aren’t free, venues aren’t free, staff overtime isn’t free… etc.

You’ve got to wonder what is taking so long. I’m such a pessimist, I can’t wait to be let down, but I know others are hopeful that the LADOT “Yes, we can’t” Bikeways Division came through with this plan.

If we’re still talking about the peanuts cost of a full implementation of past bike plans (~$60 million), then I hope that part of this process becomes finding LA money to pay for the improvements.

Begging for scraps from the MTA is a waste of time as their funding guidelines prohibit money to go to slowing down cars.

The State has nothing significant to oontribute.

I’m so fired up, I’m going to go write a blog post about what funds ought to be diverted to paying for the Bike Master Plan!
