I've been sparring with fellow SM residents over this in the LAist thread of the same story. It's so silly, and I proposed a number of alternatives that could benefit everyone without needing to use yet another unnecessary police crack down.

Oh good grief. As soon as I saw this on the LA Times' homepage, I knew that the "People's Republic of Santa Monica" jokes were finally at an end.

I can sympathize with people annoyed at crowds of people gathered around their house everyday. However, when you induce your local police department to give people tickets for doing push-ups on public property, immediately lose credibility. What a bunch of spoiled brats these homeowners are!

Here's an idea that would never work (but is the right thing to do): re-zone the area for light commercial uses, and play off the location's appeal as a work-out area. Ay, these pampered plutocrats in their craftsman castles!

Any propostition to control developement to an acceptable and agreed upon pace will affect traffic. Leaving this to unaccountable forces is irresponsible and leaves it an article of faith which has no basis for being believed.
