Taking a Ride, with a Couple Thousand Friends, by the LA River

The Arc of Tires Marked the Stop and Start for Many Riders

Yesterday marked the 8th Los Angeles River Ride. Thousands of cyclists, riders and even some Ridazz gathered at Griffith Park to go on organized rides of 10, 50, 70 or 100 miles. The first ride started at 7:00 A.M., and by the time I packed up my bike at around 1:30 most of the rides were completed but the party at Griffith Park continued. There are plenty more photos after the jump.

fyi for sticklers – that t-shirt of mine is from the Bike Along The Los Angeles River from 1999. The 1999 event was co-sponsored (with Friends of the LA River, Occidental College’s Urban and Environmental Policy Institute and others) by the LACBC which got its start in 1998. The shirt pre-dates the LACBC’s first full-on “River Ride” but doesn’t pre-date the LACBC. I think that LACBC’s first River Ride was in 2001.

    Thanks Joe, it is fixed.

  • Kudos to the Bike Coalition for organizing such a great ride! Some of the highlights for me was seeing so many riders (1,500+ I hear!), watching a hundred or so kids in Southgate get bikes and then ride the river and the dramatic artwork of the giant arch of bicycle wheels that greeted participants in Griffth Park.

  • True dat. great ride. we’ll make next year’s even better for sure. and i’m gonna rock the century next year.

Does anyone know where I can find the photos taken of us while on the bike path?? I received a slip regarding universal-photography but I didn’t see anything there.

  • Yes I do Larry.
