there is bicycle parking at union station in the gateway parking building. solid, sturdy inverted u's line the space. since i've been parking my bike there (almost a year ago), i've seen/heard numerable people get their bike stolen. they've always used cable locks to lock their bike.

bike thieves aren't the most complex group of people. they are opportunists, preying on the weak and naive. simply give them a reason to pick someone else's bike. make yours not worth their time. with so many crappily parked bikes out there, it's like an all you can eat buffet for them.

also - if you find yourself saying "just this once my bike will be fine" you'll probably lose your bike.

back to union station, the racks are in a covered parking garage on regional government property, under video surveillance. if you get your bike stolen there, it could get stolen anywhere.

it's hard for me to feel sorry for people who get their bike stolen when it's pretty easy to prevent it.

When I was in college in Santa Barbara I used *ahem* acquire *ahem* bikes - and these two know what they are talking about.

In my experience biking in L.A., downtown is the worst. If you park near or around the library you are guaranteed to have anything that is not welded onto your bike stolen. The longer you leave it, the more they will take.

I'm so parnaoid now, I bring my bike with me indoors whenever I get a chance.
