We might see that happening, especially with Foothill or other operators such as Pasadena ARTS, Glendale Beeline or Beach Cities Transit...

Metro would be stupid to push harder for contracting out service. We'd see another month-plus strike, also in a year when a rail line opens, lead to a fruitless capitulation.

Plus, we all know the service Metro contracts out is lousy.

What Metro might do is try to devolve more service to Foothill and munis. Balkanization is less of an issue with the EZ Pass. It can turn over Division 9, except for lines 70, 76 and 770 to Foothill Transit.

It can fold lines 4, 20, 28 and 30 with the Big Blue Bus lines that complement them and have Santa Monica operate them. The winners would be the riders.

And what about it? All options are going to be on the table, including fares and contracting out service. I would expect the MTA to push harder on contracting service in the 2009 labor negotiations. You preserve the jobs for the employees that are here but you start contracting out some of the trunk lines, and/or some of the Rapid lines, as an experiment. Rapid lines are perfect for contractors since they have no timepoints and they just have to depart from the start terminal at the same time.

A friend pointed out this may mean fares will be revisited.

And what are the BRU meeting w/MTA? Only the new service provision is left dangling.

Thank goodness!!
I'm so happy that service cuts have been canceled, I am very pleasantly surprised by this decision.
Let's hope MTA can balance their budget gap (some other ways), but in any case - thank you, Metro, for not cutting the service from transit-depended riders.

Thanks for bringing us the good news about the service cuts being canceled.
Can you explain more on what you mean that "rail in Los Angeles loses money on every rider"?
